Did you adopt a pandemic puppy?

You’re not the only one: Research suggests that more than half of American households now have a pet to call their own.

If you’re among that bunch, you’ve probably enjoyed the onslaught of cuddles and affection. What you might not have enjoyed quite as much? The onslaught of bills. The average person spends $1,333 per year on their pet — a hefty lift for those of us on a budget.

To help manage medical costs (especially the surprise ones), more and more people are turning to pet insurance. But with so many brands out there, it can be hard to choose which is best for your wallet.

Chime + Wagmo = puppy love

To make your decision a little easier, we’ve partnered with Wagmo, a pet wellness company that, like Chime, has your back.

You can sign up for Wagmo via the Chime Marketplace, a space where we share special offers from amazing brands, all vetted by us — and dedicated to bringing you financial peace of mind.

What is Wagmo?

It all started when Christie Horvath’s dog, Denver, began experiencing seizures.

When she took him to the vet, she was presented with a stack of bills and insurance paperwork, as well as an agonizing decision: Go thousands of dollars into debt? Or risk losing her dog?

Christie decided to go into debt. And right then and there, she also decided to create a new and better type of pet insurance.

The result: Wagmo, a pet wellness company that prioritizes transparency and empathy, and that reduces financial stress so owners can focus on what really matters.

How does Wagmo work?

If you’ve shopped around for pet insurance before, we’d venture to guess it wasn’t a great experience. You were probably surprised by what companies don’t cover (a lot), confused by the complicated mumbo jumbo (coinsurance? waiting periods?), and overwhelmed by the various price points.

Wagmo strives to be different — not only by being super transparent and easy to understand — but also by offering two different plans, so you can choose the coverage that fits your needs:

  • Pet Wellness: This plan reimburses you for everyday expenses like vaccines, exam fees, and flea and heartworm meds. With certain plans, it’ll even cover grooming and dental! These are the pesky costs that add up over time (and that most pet insurance companies don’t bother to cover).
  • Pet Insurance: This plan reimburses you for emergencies, such as surgeries, cancer treatment, or broken bones. Though no one likes thinking about that stuff, pet insurance offers the peace of mind that you can pay for treatment if something does happen.

When you sign up for Wagmo, you can opt for either a wellness plan or an insurance plan, or pair them together for comprehensive coverage. It’s up to you!

Is Wagmo right for you?

Based on over 19,000 claims, Wagmo estimates the average pet’s annual checkup costs more than $260.

On the other hand, the cost of Wagmo’s introductory wellness plan — which covers those visits — costs $240 per year (not counting the Chime member discount!). A Wagmo wellness plan, in other words, could save you some money.

And while that’s certainly a good thing, we’d argue that another feature of Wagmo is actually more valuable: the fact it’s basically an automatic savings tool.

Since signing up for Wagmo means putting a little bit of money toward your pet’s health each month, you’ll never again have to scramble to pay future vet bills, whether they’re for regular checkups or unexpected emergencies.

That’s especially important if you have a limited budget or a variable income — because no one wants to make tough decisions about their pet’s well-being due to financial constraints. By reducing stress on your finances and yourself, Wagmo lets you be there for your pet no matter what. In our opinion, that’s kinda priceless.
