Do I need a credit check to apply for the Chime Card?

No, there is no credit check required to apply for a Chime Card. There is no impact on your credit scores when you apply for a Chime Card.12

Will applying for the Chime Card affect my credit score?

It won't. Since the Chime Card doesn't require a credit check, applying won't trigger a hard inquiry or ding your score. You'll only need to verify your identity, which keeps your credit report untouched. This means you can open a Chime Card without a credit check affecting your current score.

How does the Chime Card help me build credit?

Consistent use of the Chime Card can help you build credit with on-time payment history, increase the length of your credit history over time, and more.4 With the Chime Card, Chime will report your monthly payments to the three major bureaus – TransUnion®, Experian®, and Equifax®. We report your highest balance, your payment amount, and payment date.

Here's something that can really help: utilization isn't reported, so using a higher percentage of your spending limit won't negatively affect your score.13 You’re using money that’s already in your account, so when you use the card responsibly and pay on time, you're creating a track record that can help your financial profile grow.

Are there any fees or interest charges on Chime Card?

What is Safer Credit Building?

Safer Credit Building is a feature that can automatically pay your Chime Card balance on time each month. This helps you avoid missing a payment and keeps your credit-building momentum going. Since on-time payments are reported to all three credit bureaus, this feature can make it easier to stay consistent and build a strong payment history without the stress of remembering due dates.

How much should I deposit to get started?

You get to decide. The Chime Card lets you set your own spending limit14 by transferring funds to the card, so you can start with whatever amount fits your budget. There's no minimum deposit requirement beyond what you want to spend.

Is this a real credit card? Can I use it anywhere?

Yes, the Chime Card is a secured Visa® credit card, and you can use it anywhere Visa credit cards are accepted. That includes millions of merchants worldwide, plus online shopping. You'll also have access to fee-free cash withdrawals at over 47,000 in-network ATMs.15 It works just like any other credit card, with the added benefit of helping you build credit. Learn more about secured cards here.

How is the Chime Card different from a prepaid or debit card?

Unlike prepaid or debit cards, the Chime Card is a secured credit card that reports your payment activity to the credit bureaus. This means your responsible use can actually help you strengthen your financial profile over time. The Chime Card gives you the power of a traditional credit card with the spending control of only using money you've already set aside.

How long until I see my credit score improve?

Results vary for everyone, but Chime members have seen an average score increase of 28 points within about 8 months of responsible use.8 Building credit takes time, so consistency is key. By making on-time payments and letting Chime report your positive activity to the bureaus, you're taking real steps that can help your score grow over time.

Can I earn rewards with the Chime Card?

With qualifying direct deposits, you can unlock Chime Prime or Chime Plus.2 With Chime Prime, you’ll earn 5% cash back on a category of your choice, and Chime Plus members can earn 2% cash back on a category of choice.1 It's a nice bonus on top of the credit-building benefits, so you can work toward better credit while earning something back on purchases you're already making.

What happens if I miss a payment on my Chime Card?

Consistent on-time payments help build your credit history, and missing a payment or paying late can hurt it. Safer Credit Building is Chime’s autopay feature that will automatically pay your outstanding balance on-time, on its payment date, with funds that have already been set aside to cover your balance. Safer Credit Building is not a requirement to open and use the Chime Card. You also have the option to pay your Chime Card balance with external funds.

There are no late fees or interest3 for missing Chime Card payments. But if you don’t pay your Chime Card statement balance within 24 days of the due date, your card will be paused — you won’t be able to use it for new purchases until your unpaid statement balance is paid in full. At that point, we may report information about your account to the major credit bureaus. Late payments, missed payments, or other defaults may be reflected on your credit report.

The good news: you can still make a payment. As soon as you pay your full balance, we’ll re-enable your card and update your credit report to show your account is back in good standing.

Where can I find more information on Chime Card policies?

What if I want to go back to Credit Builder?

At this time, once you convert to Chime Card, you cannot revert back to Credit Builder. We’re always open to member feedback to ensure we’re building the best products for our members. Please note that closing your Credit Builder Account could impact your credit score if you are carrying a balance. If you close your Chime Account, you will not be able to re-open that account.
