FAQs
Do banks look at your credit score when you apply to open a bank account?
Banks do not look at your credit report when you apply to open a bank account.6 If you have bad credit – or no credit history at all – it’s still possible to apply. However, many banks and credit unions look at reports by consumer reporting agencies like ChexSystems. Some financial institutions may deny your application if you have a history of late fees or overdrafts.
What financial institution does not use ChexSystems®?
Many financial institutions use ChexSystems and other reports before approving you to open a bank account. If you have blemishes on your report, this can make it challenging to open a new bank account. Chime is one of a few financial institutions that does not look at ChexSystems; we don’t let your past money issues impact your ability to bank through us. That’s the power of second chance banking through Chime.
What information appears on a ChexSystems report?
Consumer reporting agencies like ChexSystems build reports based on your banking activities. Your ChexSystems report will include checking account applications, openings, and closing – including involuntary account closures. Activity such as overdrafts and late fees will also show on your ChexSystems report.
Who is eligible for second chance banking options through Chime?
Second chance banking through Chime is open to individuals who may have encountered difficulties accessing traditional banking due to blemishes on consumer reporting agency reports. Chime’s goal is to provide banking services to a wider range of people. To be eligible for a Chime Checking Account, you must have a valid Social Security number, be at least 18 years old, be a citizen or a permanent resident of the 50 United States or Washington, DC, use a United States Post Office-recognized residential mailing address, and not have an existing account with Chime.
How does Chime’s Automatic Savings feature work?
Chime offers two helpful Automatic Savings features.
- When turned on, the Round Ups feature automatically rounds up debit card purchases to the nearest dollar and transfers the spare change from your Chime Checking Account to your Savings Account.
- Chime’s Save When I Get Paid feature makes it easy to save money from your paychecks every month. All you need to do is sign up for direct deposit with Chime. If you turn this feature on, Chime automatically transfers 10% of your direct deposits of $500 or more from your Checking Account into your Savings Account when you get paid.
What fees are associated with second chance banking through Chime?
Chime offers a fee-friendly experience. The Chime Checking Account is designed to reduce financial burdens by not imposing monthly fees, minimum balance requirements, overdraft fees, or foreign transaction fees. Cash withdrawal and third-party fees may apply to Chime Checking Accounts. Out-of-network ATM withdrawal fees may apply except at MoneyPass ATMs in a 7-Eleven, or any Allpoint or Visa Plus Alliance ATM.
