Key takeaways
Here are the highlights of how SpotMe works and what you need to start using it.
SpotMe® covers your debit card purchases and cash withdrawals fee-free when you overdraft. Eligible members start with a $20 SpotMe limit, which may increase up to $200 based on factors like account history, direct deposit history, deposit amount, and other eligibility criteria.1
You can enroll in SpotMe after receiving at least one qualifying direct deposit of $200 per month.
Your SpotMe limit can grow over time based on your direct deposit history, deposit amount, and membership length.
Repayment is automatic – your next deposit covers any negative balance with no fees or interest.
Running low on funds at checkout can be stressful, especially when you know an overdraft fee could make things worse. Many traditional banks may charge around $35 each time you overdraft, and those fees can add up fast.2
That's where SpotMe comes in. If you're wondering how to use SpotMe, you're in the right place. This guide walks you through everything – from enrolling and using the feature to understanding your limit and getting Boosts from friends.
What is SpotMe and how does it work?
SpotMe is Chime's fee-free overdraft feature that covers you when you spend more than your available balance. Eligible members start with a $20 SpotMe limit, which may increase up to $200 based on factors like account history, direct deposit history, deposit amount, spending activity, and other eligibility criteria.1
SpotMe works on both your Chime Visa® Debit Card and your Chime Card™, Chime's credit card. There are no fees and no interest. You just keep spending as you normally would, and SpotMe steps in when your balance falls short.
To qualify, you need at least one qualifying direct deposit of $200 per month. Once you're enrolled, coverage kicks in automatically whenever you make an eligible purchase or cash withdrawal that exceeds your available balance.
Here's a quick example. Say you have $40 in your checking account and your grocery bill comes to $52. If you pay with your debit card, SpotMe covers the $12 difference fee-free. You'll get a notification letting you know SpotMe has you covered, and the next time money is deposited into your account, it's automatically applied to your negative balance.
What does SpotMe cover?
SpotMe covers several types of transactions, but not everything. Here's a breakdown of what's eligible and what's not.

Pay Anyone transfers: person-to-person transfers through Chime

Once SpotMe is activated, you'll receive fresh Boosts on the 1st of every month.
Find your Boosts on the home screen, where you'll see the current month and "Boosts" listed.
Tap Send $5 Boost next to the person you want to help.
