What is an overdraft fees?
An overdraft fee is a fee that a bank or credit union charges you when a purchase or other transaction exceeds the available balance in your checking account. Overdraft fees can be charged on in-store purchases, online shopping, bill payments, cash withdrawals, and other transactions. Learn more about overdraft fees on our blog.
How do I avoid overdraft fees?
Make sure to read your bank’s terms and conditions before choosing a bank account. While banks are no longer allowed to automatically charge overdraft fees without your consent, it’s possible to opt in for overdraft protection without realizing it.

Additionally, you can avoid overdraft fees by banking through Chime and opting into SpotMe to cover any debit or credit transactions or cash withdrawals that would result in a negative balance in your Chime Account.
Will I ever be charged an overdraft fee through Chime?
No. If you do not have sufficient funds in your Chime Checking Account or your secured Chime Visa® Credit Card Secured Deposit Account, or have reached your SpotMe limit (if enrolled), then your Chime Visa® Debit Card or Chime Card will be declined. There is no fee for declining transactions or for utilizing SpotMe.
What is Chime’s SpotMe?
SpotMe is a completely free service for eligible Chime members who overdraft their checking account or Chime Card™.
Once you’re eligible, enroll in SpotMe (it’s fee-free!), and we’ve got your back when you overdraft your account by up to $200.1
Who is eligible for SpotMe?
Any Chime members who currently have Chime Plus or Chime Prime6 and have activated their Chime debit card or Chime Card are eligible for SpotMe.
How do I enroll in SpotMe on Chime?
Activate your Chime card.
Open the Settings tab in your Chime app to find out if you’re eligible for the SpotMe feature (make sure you have the latest version of the app).
Once you agree to the SpotMe Terms and Conditions, you are officially enrolled in SpotMe!

How much can I overdraft with SpotMe?
Your SpotMe limit starts at $20 and may go up to $200 depending on your account activity, history, and other risk factors. Receiving bonuses and SpotMe® Boosts1 from friends with Chime can temporarily increase your SpotMe limit.
Note: Chime Member Service agents cannot increase your SpotMe limit for you.
How do I change my Chime SpotMe limit?
Your Chime SpotMe limit is set automatically by a variety of factors related to how you use your Chime account. This may include how long you’ve been a member, your account history, and how much you direct deposit per month. We’ll notify you if and when you qualify for a higher limit.
Your limit may be affected by your use of other Chime products like Instant Loans or MyPay. This helps make sure you don’t borrow more than you can manage or lose too much of your qualifying direct deposit to repayment.
If you want to manually lower your limit to a personal max you can do so by opening your Chime app > Scrolling down in your Home feed > Tapping Settings > and adjusting your limit.
If SpotMe covers me, how do I pay it back?
The next time money is deposited into your Checking Account or Chime Card secured deposit account, we’ll automatically apply it to your negative balance or owed amount. You’ll be in the clear, without having paid any overdraft fees.

1.Savings APY
The 3.75% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is only available to members with Chime Prime status, otherwise, either the 3.00% APY for members with Chime Plus status or the standard rate of 0.75% APY will apply. The APYs are effective as of 01/27/2026, are variable and may change at any time. No minimum balance required. Must have $0.01 in savings to earn interest. Chime Checking Account is required to be eligible for a Savings Account.
There’s no fee for the Chime Savings Account. Cash withdrawal and third-party fees may apply to Chime Checking Accounts. You must have a Chime Checking Account to open a Chime Savings Account.
Round Ups automatically round up debit card and credit card purchases to the nearest dollar and transfers the round up from your Chime Checking Account into your savings account. You can also automatically transfer part of your direct deposits of $1 or more from your Checking Account into your selected Chime account(s).

2.Cash back with Chime Card
With qualifying direct deposits, earn 5% cash back as a Chime Prime member or 2% cash back as a Chime Plus member on up to $1,500 of eligible secured Chime Visa® Credit Card purchases. The secured Chime Visa® Credit Card cardholders are responsible for the payment of any and all charges associated with any goods, services, reservations or bookings purchased or arranged by the Visa Signature Concierge on cardholders’ behalf. Some Restrictions and Limitations may apply. In cases where one of the benefits is not available at a hotel, the hotel may provide a substitute benefit of equal value. 4.Membership Eligibility / Chime Plus and Chime Prime Eligibility
To be eligible for Chime Prime status, receive $3,000+ in qualifying direct deposits to your Chime Checking Account in the past 34 days. To be eligible for Chime Plus status, receive either 1) a single $200+ qualifying direct deposit; or 2) $400+ in cumulative qualifying direct deposits to your Chime Checking Account in the preceding 34 days. Certain products marketed as perks have additional eligibility requirements. While some perks may have associated fees, none of these fees are mandatory to access the perks or to maintain the applicable status. 5.Instant Loans
Instant Loans provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. and serviced by Chime Capital, LLC (NMLS ID 2316451). Maximum 35.99% APR (annual percentage rate). Eligibility and loan amounts vary based on deposit activity, risk-based criteria, and your use of other Chime products. Instant Loans are only available to eligible Chime members in certain states. Loan offers will be provided by email and in the mobile app to eligible members. You cannot apply for Instant Loans.
6.Credit Building with Chime Card / Chime Card / Credit Builder, and Experian Boost
On-time payment history may have a positive impact on your credit score. Late payment may negatively impact your credit score. Chime will report your activities to Transunion®, Experian®, and Equifax®. Impact on your credit may vary, as credit scores are independently determined by credit bureaus based on a number of factors including the financial decisions you make with other financial services organizations.
To apply for Chime Card or Credit Builder, you must also open a Chime Checking Account.

Based on a representative study conducted by Experian® in Sept 2025, the top 10% of members who made their first purchase with Credit Builder, an earlier version of Chime Card, between April and August 2024, observed a FICO® Score 8 increase of 71 points after approximately 8 months. Average increase of 28 points across all participants in the study. Credit score improvement not guaranteed. Paying on time may increase your score, while late payment may decrease your score. Other credit activity can impact your score. Credit score is one of many factors creditors may consider in evaluating credit applications.
Money added to Credit Builder or Chime Card will be held in a secured deposit account as collateral for your Credit Builder card or Chime Card, and you can spend up to this amount. You can use money deposited in your Secured Deposit Account to pay off your charges at the end of every month.
Results will vary. Not all payments are boost-eligible. Some users may not receive an improved score or approval odds. Not all lenders use Experian credit files, and not all lenders use scores impacted by Experian Boost®. Learn more.
Chime Visa® Credit Card holders - Deposits and debit refunds go to your Checking Account, then transfer to your Chime Card Secured Deposit Account - other than Chime Card cash deposits at retailers, which go to your Chime Card Account, then transfer to your Secured Deposit Account. Funds are moved from your Secured Deposit Account to your Checking Account to facilitate outbound transfers and debit purchases. Your Available balance is the money you can spend with your Chime Card or Checking Account. See account agreements and statements for details.
7.MyPay
Some restrictions apply. To be eligible for MyPay®, you must receive qualifying direct deposits to your Chime Checking Account in the preceding 36 days as set forth in the MyPay Agreement. A Qualifying Direct Deposit is a deposit from an employer, payroll provider, gig economy payer, government benefits payer, or other permitted source of income by Automated Clearing House (“ACH”) or Original Credit Transaction (“OCT”). Your MyPay Credit Limit and Maximum Available Advance may change at any time. MyPay is a line of credit and available limits are based on estimated income and risk-based criteria. Eligible members may be offered a $20 - $500 Credit Limit per pay period. Limits may be impacted by your use of other Chime products. Your Credit Limit and Maximum Available Advance will be displayed to you within the Chime app. MyPay is currently only available to eligible Chime members in certain states. Other restrictions may apply. See Bancorp MyPay Agreement or Stride MyPay Agreement for details.
Option to get funds instantly for a fee of 3% of the advance amount ($2 minimum, $5 maximum) per advance, or get funds for free within 24 hours. See Bancorp MyPay Agreement or Stride MyPay Agreement for details.

8.SpotMe® and SpotMe Boost
SpotMe® on Credit is an optional, no interest/no fee overdraft line of credit tied to the Secured Deposit Account. SpotMe on Debit is an optional, no fee service attached to your Chime Checking Account (individually or collectively, "SpotMe"). Eligibility for SpotMe requires $200 or more in qualifying direct deposits to your Chime Checking Account each month.
Qualifying members will be allowed to overdraw their Chime Checking Account and/or their Secured Deposit Account up to $20 in total, but may be later eligible for a higher combined limit of up to $200 or more based on member’s Chime account history, direct deposit frequency and amount, spending activity and other risk-based factors. Your SpotMe Limit will be displayed to you within the Chime mobile app. You will receive notice of any changes to your SpotMe Limit. SpotMe for Credit and SpotMe on Debit share a single SpotMe limit. Your SpotMe Limit may change at any time, at Chime or its banking partners’ discretion. Although there are no overdraft fees, there may be out-of-network or third-party fees associated with ATM transactions or OTC cash withdrawal fees at retailers. SpotMe won’t cover non-card transactions, including ACH transfers, Pay Anyone transfers, or Chime Checkbook transactions. SpotMe terms and conditions.

11.Products and Services with your Chime Checking Account and Chime Visa® Debit Card
Early access to direct deposit funds depends on the timing of the submission of the payment file from the payer. We generally make these funds available on the day the payment file is received, which may be up to 2 days earlier than the scheduled payment date.
Pay Anyone transactions will be monitored and may be held, delayed or blocked if the transfer could result in fraud or another form of financial harm. Sometimes instant transfers can be delayed. Non-Chime members must use a valid debit card to claim funds.
Out-of-network ATM withdrawal and over the counter advance fees may apply except at FCTI® ATMs in a 7-Eleven® or Speedway, or any Allpoint® or Visa® Plus Alliance ATM participating in the Allpoint network.

Once the retailer accepts your cash, the funds will be transferred to your selected Chime account. Barcode and debit card cash deposits land in the Checking Account, while Credit Builder card and Chime Card cash deposits first go through your Card Account and then land in your Secured Account. Cash deposit fees may apply if using a retailer other than Walgreens and Duane Reade.
Mobile Check Deposit eligibility is determined by Chime in its sole discretion and may be granted based on various factors including, but not limited to, a member's direct deposit enrollment status.
You must notify your financial institution immediately of any unauthorized use. For specific restrictions, limitations and other details, please consult your issuer.

13.Filing Personal Tax Returns through the Chime App
Tax e-file services provided by April Tax Solutions Inc. ("april"). These tax filing offers are not endorsed or offered by our partners, The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A.
Chime does not guarantee timing of refund. Five day refund estimate is based on 2024 tax year filing data. Refund timing estimates are dependent upon timing of complete tax return submission and when the IRS submits your refund.
Maximum refund guarantee is provided by april. If you use april's service to prepare and file your return and you find an error in the tax preparation that entitles you to a larger refund (or smaller liability), you may use their service to amend that return at no additional charge. To qualify, the larger refund or smaller tax liability must not be due to differences or inaccuracies in data supplied by you, your choice not to claim a deduction or credit, positions taken on your return that are contrary to law, or changes in federal or state tax laws.
