If the thought of budgets or building credit history makes your heart race and your palms sweaty, you’re not alone. Financial literacy isn’t often part of the school curriculum.

When you’re trying to figure out anything from taxes to retirement savings, you might feel like you’re missing the building blocks for financial progress and don’t know where to get relatable money advice. But don’t worry – Chime® is here to bring financial education back to basics.

Back to basics with Financial Progress Month™

You’ve probably come across those memes about how the only knowledge we remember from our school days is that mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. Well, it’s kind of true! According to a recent survey conducted on behalf of Chime*, while only a quarter (26%) of Gen Z respondents say they can define taxable income, more than half (52%) of Gen Zs understand mitochondria’s function.

And given that filing taxes is a yearly requirement in adulthood, you’d think more people would have a solid grasp on the basics. Yet, the survey data tells a different story: Americans could define triangles — scalene (69%), isosceles (57%), and equilateral (72%) — better than the difference between a W-2 and a W-4 (46%.)

Many Americans need more knowledge to thrive in the real world and unlock financial progress™. That’s why we’re partnering with T-Pain for Financial Progress Month to demonstrate the need to go back to the basics of financial literacy.

Class is in session and we’re talking money. We teamed up with @T-Pain to crash a class for financial literacy month, or what we like to call it – Financial Progress Month. @Tiffany The Budgetnista Aliche #Chime #FinancialProgressMonth #tpain #crashcourse #college #fyp

Despite the global success of T-Pain’s hit single “Buy U a Drank” and other music, his financial journey has been full of ups and downs. According to the rapper, he once went from having $40 million in the bank to borrowing money to get his kids Burger King®. And it wasn’t until he made a few financial missteps that he grasped the importance of financial literacy.

To educate his fans on what he’s learned about managing money and developing positive financial habits, T-Pain partnered up with Chime to crash a college class to teach students “Financial Progress 101.”

Along with financial advisor Tiffany Aliche, aka The Budgetnista, T-Pain quizzed students on their financial knowledge and opened up about his own financial journey. He provided insight into the decisions he made and how he would have managed his finances differently now that he has a better relationship with money.

The date and time of the drawing will be determined by Sponsor in its discretion. Prize winners will be randomly selected among all eligible Entries received during the Entry Period.

B.         NOTIFICATION OF WINNING: By no later than ten (10) business days after the end of the Entry Period, the potential winners will be notified by Chime. Chime Members will receive an email notification at the email address associated with their Chime Checking Account. Potential winners who do not have a Chime Checking Account at the time of potential winner notification, they will receive a message on the Social Media Channel they used to enter the Sweepstakes.  Each potential winner then has forty-eight (48) hours from the time the message is sent to send a reply message to Chime. The 48-hour deadline to reply and claim a prize begins the moment Chime sends the potential winner a winner notification message. Class starts now: how to unlock financial progress™

To kickstart your financial progress journey, learn how to take control of your finances and make informed money decisions. Here are a few steps to position yourself for success:

  • Create a budget and savings goal: The first step is to create a budget that aligns with your financial goals. This way, you have a clear picture of where your money is going each month and can identify areas to cut back to increase your savings. If you don’t know how much you should be saving each month, use a savings goal calculator to do the heavy lifting for you.
  • Build your credit history: Bad money habits like missing credit card payments and maxing out your cards can negatively affect your credit scores and lower your chances of getting approved by future lenders. To boost your financial health, start taking steps to rebuild your credit, like staying below a 30% credit utilization ratio and paying bills on time.
  • Tackle high-interest debt: High-interest debts, like credit card balances or payday loans, often come with sky-high interest rates that can slow down your financial progress. Get them out of the way by fitting debt payments into your monthly budget.

Embracing financial growth: one step at a time

Improving your finances is about making tangible progress day by day. Don’t be discouraged if your finances aren’t where you want them to be right now.
