Why We Built This: Chime PrimeTM

Rewards programs have become a defining feature of modern banking. Competition has pushed these offerings to become richer over time, including perks that have become commonplace in today’s premium card market. In many ways, that has been good for consumers. But it has also created new problems.

Traditional rewards programs are often tied to fees, complexity, or eligibility requirements for accessing top rewards programs. And once you’re in, points systems are often fragmented with ever-changing restrictions. Value is tied to your ability to keep up, and that mental load adds up fast. The result is that rich rewards remain out of reach for many, blocked either by high hurdles — like annual fees — or the effort required to make them work.

Chime PrimeTM was designed in response to both of these barriers: an alternative to traditional banking built for real people that delivers real value — from straightforward cash-back rewards on Chime CardTM spend to Prime benefits like its savings rate, flexible liquidity options, and travel perks.

Built for Real Life

Member research revealed a consistent pattern: People aren’t asking for more categories or more cards, they’re asking for relevance and rewards tied to everyday, non-discretionary spend like gas, groceries, and monthly bills, earned when they use their Chime Card.

 

That insight shaped our approach. Rather than incentivizing aspirational or occasional purchases, Chime Prime lets members choose a cash back category that reflects where they actually spend. That way, they earn 5% back on exactly the categories that matter most1 — without having to adapt their habits to fit a rotating schedule. Our goal was to shift rewards from a system that needs to be maintained to one that works quietly in the background.

 

That principle extends across the full banking bundle. Our features stack seamlessly (hello, up to 24¢/gal cash back on gas with a Chime Deal!2) and are managed centrally in a top-rated mobile banking app. Relevance, interoperability, simplicity: That’s the architecture.

The Industry Locked Premium Behind Fees and Complexity. We Took a Different Approach.

Chime Prime also introduces benefits traditionally reserved for luxury travel cards — airport lounge access through Priority Pass,3 international ATM fee reimbursements, a premium card — without the fees4 or traditional barriers that typically gate access to these kinds of benefits. That matters in practice, not just in principle.

 

During beta testing, one member traveling to meet the Chime team used airport lounge access for the first time in their life. Moments like that show what expanding access actually means for us. It’s not just about financial tools, but also about experiences that make your day-to-day better and signal, in no uncertain terms, that you belong.

The Case for a Primary Relationship

Structurally, Chime Prime reflects a broader goal: earning the primary banking relationship with our members. In traditional, tiered banking, premium benefits are supported by fees and often subsidized by customers in lower tiers, who receive less value and pay for the privilege. Chime Prime takes a different approach: We reward loyalty based on engagement, unlocking Prime status through regular direct deposits of $3,000 per month.5

 

Chime Prime and Chime Plus™ aren’t designed to enforce hierarchy, they are celebrations of this ongoing relationship. We know that receiving members’ paychecks is a demonstration of immense trust. We recognize and reward that trust with benefits reserved for members who make Chime their primary financial home.

 

In turn, this commitment allows us to offer members rewards that go beyond perks, such as better liquidity options. This is key for two reasons: First, it allows better economics and cheaper cost of capital for our members. Second, when members shift more of their everyday spend onto Chime Card, those transactions generate higher interchange, which makes the cash-back model sustainable and helps grow our Average Revenue per Active Member (ARPAM).

 

Chime Prime and Plus combine cash-back rewards and the best of everyday banking benefits, motivating members to consolidate their financial lives with us. And the more consistently they engage, the more the platform delivers in return.

Building for What Comes Next

We’ve reached a level of maturity that encourages us to meet new audiences and engage with our existing audiences in even deeper ways — and that requires new value propositions. At the same time, we want existing members to feel heard and give them more ways to grow with us.

 

In that sense, Chime Prime is less a standalone product than a continuation of the Chime platform itself — a vehicle for deepening relationships and continuously expanding what we offer members.

 

Our measure of success is simple: dollars back in members’ accounts through cash-back rewards, moments of financial stress relieved through better liquidity and everyday benefits, and trust built with Chime. Chime Prime delivers immediate value to members today while laying a foundation for tomorrow.
