Wells Fargo charges multiple fees for each account type. Whether you’re sending, receiving, or moving around money, there may be a fee involved. The basic fees applicable to most accounts at Wells Fargo are monthly service fees, overdraft fees, foreign transaction fees, and out-of-network ATM fees.
Wells Fargo checking account fees
Wells Fargo offers four different checking accounts:
- Clear Access Banking
- Everyday Checking
- Prime Checking
- Premier Checking
Here’s how Wells Fargo checking fees apply for each account type.
Clear Access Banking
Clear Access Banking is a basic, no-frills checking account designed for teenagers, students, and young adults, with no age restrictions for opening an account. To open an account, you must deposit $25.
There is a $5 monthly service fee, although it’s waivable under the following circumstances.
- The account owner is between 13 and 24 years old
- You have a qualifying non-civilian military direct deposit through the Wells Fargo Worldwide Military Banking program
You won’t pay a fee if you withdraw money from a Wells Fargo ATM. However, you’ll pay $3 per withdrawal at an out-of-network ATM in the U.S. and $5 per transaction outside the U.S. You’ll also pay 3% of the transaction amount for international purchases using your debit card.
You’ll pay $10 for each cashier’s check and $5 for each money order. This account doesn’t come with checks, although you can still deposit them online or via the app.
The Clear Access Banking account doesn’t provide overdraft services, which means there are no overdraft fees to worry about.1
Everyday Checking
The Everyday Checking account, as the name suggests, is a convenient, everyday account for the average consumer. Like the Clear Access Banking account, it has a minimum opening deposit of $25.
The Wells Fargo monthly service fee for this account is $10; however, it can be waived by meeting one of the following conditions.
- Maintaining a $500 minimum daily balance
- Making $500 or more in total qualifying direct deposits per month
- Being between 17 and 24 years old
- Making a qualifying monthly non-civilian military direct deposit with the Wells Fargo Worldwide Military Banking program
Cash withdrawals are fee-free if you use a Wells Fargo ATM. For out-of-network ATM transactions, you’ll pay $3 per U.S. withdrawal and $5 per non-U.S. withdrawal.
The Everyday Checking account charges a $35 overdraft fee per item, but you can link another account to enable Overdraft Protection and avoid this fee. The fee won’t apply to transactions of $5 or less, and Wells Fargo won’t charge you more than three times per business day.
There are also fees for cashier’s checks ($10 each) and money orders ($5 each). This account comes with check-writing capabilities, though prices for personal checks vary depending on your chosen design.
If you travel abroad, you’ll pay 3% of the transaction amount when you pay for goods or services using your debit card1
Prime Checking Account
The Prime Checking account is an interest-bearing banking option for people who maintain higher balances. It has a minimum opening deposit of $25 and a monthly service fee of $25. However, the fee is waived if you have more than $20,000 in your linked Wells Fargo accounts.
There’s no fee for personal checks or cash withdrawals from non-Wells Fargo ATMs. You may still be charged a third-party fee, however.
This account also has no fees for cashier’s checks, money orders, or incoming wire transfers. There’s a $35 overdraft fee that applies if you don’t have another account linked for Overdraft Protection.1
Premier Checking Account
The Wells Fargo Premier Checking account is designed for individuals with higher balances who want upgraded features, such as earning interest, along with fewer fees. To open an account, you only need a $25 deposit.
The account carries a $35 monthly service fee, although it is waivable if you have at least $250,000 in linked Wells Fargo accounts, including checking, savings, and investment accounts.
In terms of fees, you pay nothing for:
- Wells Fargo Personal Wallet checks
- Wells Fargo and non-Wells Fargo ATM transactions
- Cashier’s checks
- Money orders
- Foreign transaction fees
- Wire transfers
There’s an overdraft fee of $35 per item, but you can avoid it by linking another Wells Fargo account for Overdraft Protection1
Wells Fargo savings account fees
In addition to four checking accounts, Wells Fargo has two different savings accounts:
- Way2Save Savings
- Platinum Savings
Both savings accounts come with monthly service fees. Here’s what you can expect to pay, and how to waive the monthly fee.
Way2Save Savings
Way2Save Savings is a basic account designed to help children, teens, and first-time savers build their savings. Anyone 13 years or older can open an account as the primary owner, and children 12 years or under can open a joint account with an adult.
The minimum opening deposit is $25, and a $5 monthly service fee applies. However, you can waive the fee if you meet one of the following conditions:
- Maintain a minimum daily balance of $300
- Schedule one automatic transfer each fee period of $25 or more from a linked Wells Fargo checking account
- Schedule one automatic transfer each business day within the fee period of $1 or more from a linked Wells Fargo checking account
- Receive one or more Save As You Go transfers from a linked Wells Fargo checking account
- Have a primary account owner who is 24 years old or under
You can also link your Way2Save Savings account to your Wells Fargo checking account for free to enable Overdraft Protection. By doing so, you can also access the money in your savings account using your debit or ATM card.2
Platinum Savings
The Platinum Savings account is designed for individuals who maintain a higher savings balance. Although you only need $25 to open an account, you must maintain a minimum daily balance of $3,500 each fee period to avoid the $12 monthly service fee.
If you link your Platinum Savings account to a Premier Checking account, you can access higher relationship rates for a higher return on your savings.
Platinum Savings offers flexible options for withdrawing money. You receive unlimited branch and Wells Fargo ATM withdrawals, as well as the option to write checks.3
Wells Fargo overdraft fee
f your account balance falls below zero, Wells Fargo will charge you a fee.
You will be charged a $35 fee per transaction if your account balance is insufficient.1 There are a few exceptions and special rules that apply to Wells Fargo overdraft fees.
- You don’t have to pay an additional charge if the amount credited by Wells Fargo is $5 or less
- You can only be charged a maximum of three fees a day or $105
- You are not charged overdraft fees on items returned due to non-sufficient funds (NSF)
- Overdraft fees do not apply to Clear Access Banking accounts
Wells Fargo ATM fee
There are no fees for cash withdrawals from Wells Fargo ATMs. However, you may pay a fee if you withdraw money from an out-of-network ATM. Wells Fargo ATM fees are as follows.1
- $3 per transaction within the U.S.
- $5 per transaction outside the U.S.
If you have a Prime Checking account, Wells Fargo will reimburse one U.S. and one international ATM fee from out-of-network ATMs per monthly fee period. And if you’re a Premier Checking account holder, all ATM fees are waived.
Stop payment fees
If you sign a check – or several checks – and later realize you do not have enough money in your account, you can put a stop payment on it. A stop payment will prevent the overdraft fee.
Wells Fargo doesn’t charge a fee to stop payment for a check or pre-authorized ACH payment.
