Overdraft fees cost American households billions of dollars every year. In 2024, banks and credit unions collected an estimated $12.1 billion in overdraft and non-sufficient funds (NSF) fee revenue in 2024. If you’ve ever been hit with a $35 charge for spending a few dollars over your balance, you know first-hand how painful that can be.

A new case study from the Financial Health Network (FHN), one of the country’s leading financial health research organizations, highlights a better way. Their research spotlights Chime’s SpotMe® as “an early and prominent example of a free overdraft innovation.”1

Here’s a breakdown of what the study found, and why Chime’s fee-free checking account2 offers a solution for anyone looking to eliminate overdraft fees permanently.

What are overdraft fees and who gets charged?

An overdraft fee is charged when you overdraft your account, or spend more money than you have in your account. The average overdraft fee in 2026 is $32.75,  and those fees can stack up fast. According to FHN’s research1:

  • More than half of all overdraft transactions are triggered by purchases of $50 or less
  • Around 1 in 7 U.S. households experienced at least one overdraft fee in 2024
  • Many consumers overdraft unintentionally by misjudging their balance, the timing of a pending transaction, or an upcoming automatic payment
  • Over 51% of U.S. consumers spend as much as or more than they earn each month, making short-term cash-flow gaps a common reality

In practice, overdraft functions typically hit consumers who need more flexible cash flow. With SpotMe, Chime aims to provide members with a financial safety net, rather than dinging members over small transactions.

How Chime members use SpotMe in managing their finances

FHN analyzed anonymized data from a random sample of 100,000 SpotMe-eligible Chime members over a 12-month period (January 2024 – December 2024).1 Their findings show how much demand exists for fee-free overdraft coverage and how members actually use it.

High SpotMe usage rate signals real consumer need

93% of eligible members used SpotMe at least once during the study period. As of March 2025, nearly half (49%) of all active Chime members use SpotMe in a given month. FHN notes this reflects “strong market demand for this type of fee-free overdraft alternative.”1

SpotMe helps when it matters most

The study examined how SpotMe usage changed during months with income or expense changes. Key findings:

  • Members used $53 more in SpotMe coverage during months when they had unexpected expenses
  • When income dropped sharply, members instinctively cut back on spending — showing that SpotMe users are thoughtful about their finances
  • High-frequency SpotMe users tended to carry lower account balances and experience more income volatility, suggesting the feature works for those who need it most

Members actively manage their SpotMe coverage

While some may use overdraft coverage as a passive safety net, many Chime members take proactive steps to manage their SpotMe usage.

  • 51% of SpotMe users set a custom “Personal Max” limit at least once, actively managing how much coverage they use
  • 69% of users reached their full SpotMe limit at least once during the year, indicating regular, meaningful use
  • 80% of SpotMe users sent or received at least one “Boost” — a temporary $5 limit increase friends can send each other4 — during the study period

How to qualify for fee-free overdraft protection with Chime

Getting started with SpotMe is simple. Here’s how to qualify and activate it:

  1. Open a Chime Checking Account. It’s free, with no monthly fees and no minimum balance requirements.
  2. Set up a qualifying direct deposit of at least $200/month.3 This can be from an employer, payroll provider, gig platform, or benefits program.
  3. Enroll in SpotMe in the Chime app by toggling it on and accepting the terms.
  4. Start with a $20–$100 limit that can grow up to $200 as your account history builds.

No credit check. No hidden fees. No surprise charges.

And with qualifying direct deposits, you may also be eligible for more of Chime’s perks with Chime Plus or Chime Prime.5

How to increase your SpotMe limit

Your SpotMe limit grows automatically based on your account activity, but there are ways to give it a boost:

  • Maintain consistent direct deposits: Your limit is tied to your deposit history, so regular paychecks help.
  • Use your Chime account as your primary spending account: More engagement leads to higher limits over time.
  • Ask friends for Boosts: Chime members can send each other up to four temporary $5 SpotMe Boosts per month.6
  • Watch for promotional bonuses: Chime occasionally offers limit increases through in-app promotions.

Bank Smarter, Progress FurtherTM

Chime was founded to better meet the needs of the 75% of Americans earning up to $100,000 a year by creating alternatives to high-fee banking that works for them, not against them. SpotMe is one of the clearest expressions of that mission. Since its launch in 2019, Chime has provided members over $43 billion in overdraft coverage through SpotMe®, indicating that fee-free banking aligns with consumer needs.

Why Chime is an excellent option for overdraft coverage – and more

The Financial Health Network’s findings place SpotMe in a broader story about what financial institutions can and should look like. Traditional overdraft usually doesn’t function as a safety net for consumers, but ends up penalizing customers in vulnerable moments. SpotMe flips that model entirely.

If you’re tired of paying $35 for a $4 latte that tips you over your balance, it’s time to make the switch. Chime’s SpotMe gives you up to $200 in fee-free overdraft coverage3 — so you can cover everyday expenses, navigate the unexpected, and stop losing money to a system that wasn’t designed with you in mind.
